Alen BreatheSmart Classic excellent purifying applicable can cover an estimated 1100 sq. ft. in under 1 - 2 hours at max speed (690 sq. ft. for speed 2). No doubt it can cover most ground including large living hall, lounge, bedroom or playroom. Airflow distribution is punchy and consistent with speed 1 start at a strong 150 cfm, speed 2 at 185 cfm, speed 3 at 225 cfm and turbo at 286 cfm. Auto mode would adjust between the 4 speed and is fairly responsive to surrounding particles.
As you can see from the chart above, Alen BreatheSmart Classic is ranked third from top in purifying coverage. Very impressive even beating the likes of Blueair 605, Rabbit Air MinusA2 and IQAir HealthPro Plus. The consistent airflow, ionizer and option to choose your own type of HEPA filter is highly appreciated, even though it lacks the filtration depth like few of its competitors. Nonetheless, Alen BreatheSmart Classic has no problem achieving the stated purifying radius within its 4 selectable fan speed.

CADR at an average of 300 cfm for dust, pollen and smoke. Based on the purifying coverage and airflow rate, there is more than enough juice to boost through the 4 selectable fanspeed. Alen BreatheSmart Classic can handles all types of household particles and allergens but you do have to select the right type of filter in order for it to work. For example, to deal with smoke related troubles, opt for HEPA-Fresh filter rather than the standard HEPA-Pure filter (more on this later).
While it's safe to say that Alen BreatheSmart Classic CADR is at mid-tier range even though the chart above might suggest otherwise, it's cost VS CADR ratio is way more than Winix HR1000 and Oransi Max HEPA further losing out to the highly cost-effective Honeywell HPA300. Keep in mind that there are more than 1 way of measuring the relationship between airflow and filters, Alen BreatheSmart Classic might not necessarily gain the full beneficiary of CADR test so use the above info sparingly. ^ Alen BreatheSmart Classic filters/ technologies/ lifespan

While Alen BreatheSmart Classic "only" comes with 1 bundled filter set, the filter quality is there therefore it still rocks in filtering out common airborne pollutants at a reasonable time. Starting with the washable pre-filter (attached above HEPA filter) that would trap large particles such as dust and pet hair while prolonging the HEPA filter lifespan. Depending on which HEPA filter you choose, the basic HEPA-Pure filter is great at filtering out common allergens without any deodorization capability. Optional filters upgrade includes mold, germs & asthma specialist HEPA-Silver, chemical, VOCs, smoke targeted HEPA-FreshPlus (recommended) and pet & diaper odor neutralizer HEPA-OdorCell. Last but not least the built-in ionizer would release negative ions and electrostatically merge unwanted particles causing them to drop to the floor.

Filter maintenance and care

Unlike every other console air purifier that comes with multi-layer of filters, replacing Alen BreatheSmart Classic filter is probably the easiest task as there is only 1 filter change. With the unit standing upright, pull out the front panel from the bottom corner. Remove the used filter by pulling the pull strings and place the used filter in a plastic bag to prevent dust from re-spreading into the air. Prepare the new filter set by removing the plastic wrap and insert into the air purifier with the pull strings facing towards you (outward). Finally, snap back the front panel but this time start with top tabs then follow by the bottom. The entire steps take less than 2 minutes excluding cleaning the washable pre-filter. To wash the pre-filter, slowly peel the black foam layer that is held on work Velcro. Proceed by lightly vacuum or wash the pre-filter off any large particles such as dust and hair. If you choose to skip the pre-filter care (not recommended), you only need to do this every 6 – 18 months as the HEPA filter is non-washable.

Alen BreatheSmart Classic power consumption
Power consumption

Alen BreatheSmart Classic 42 - 56 dB noise level is standard in its class although on paper it feels quieter on the whole (probably due to the WhisperMax technology). Auto mode is great in controlling the noise level for bedroom use unless you are planning to operate it constantly at max speed. Ionizer does not generate much noise unlike some other models.

Power consumption varies depending on the fanspeed you are constantly in. Between 64 - 105 W, it is slightly higher than we would hope but nonetheless understandable given is purifying range. Like every other BreatheSmart air purifier, Alen BreatheSmart Classic is energy star certified so it's somewhat energy-efficient if you manage to meet its criteria.

^ Alen BreatheSmart Classic replacement filters estimated cost
Alen BreatheSmart Classic has good price VS performance ratio but far from cheap as with most air purifier in this category. Features wise is premium level well-equipped but the cost could go even higher if you opt for different front panel design and filter upgrade. We highly recommend doing on the latter for better overall filtration. What's standout is Alen BreatheSmart Classic annual filter cost which is considerably cheap in its group as only 1 filter needed to be replaced. On normal use the filter should last between 12 - 18 months, perfect time frame to stock up online with no shortage of stock.
One of the more expensive air purifier in the segment, Alen BreatheSmart Classic price is clearly reflected on the above chart outpricing the likes of Winix and Honeywell air purifier. Still, it is cheaper than Rabbit Air MinusA2 as only these 2 air purifiers offer the choice of customizable front panel and filters. Annual filter replacement cost is on the better end with specific air condition and limited operation hours. On 24x7 operation, expect a much higher maintenance cost as you can see from the annual filter chart. Back to the price guide, Alen BreatheSmart Classic has pretty much a consistent price with little discount. You can try purchasing Alen BreatheSmart Classic in major retail like Lowe's, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, Target or go with our prefer route Amazon instead. Beside the 30 days money back guarantee and free shipping (limited seller), there is also bundled deal and refurbished model although we do not recommend the later. Purchasing from official website is also doable even though you have to register a new account, you gain the benefit of 60 days return policy, the most complete front panel design selection and also free shipping (limited to continental US).

The challengers

Alen BreatheSmart FIT50

The cheaper and slightly smaller version with similarity in design, features and the highlight swappable front panel. The downside of picking Alen BreatheSmart Fit50 is you do have to settle for a weaker CADR and smaller purifying coverage that at best 900 sq ft.

Alen BreatheSmart FLEX

The smallest version with even cheaper price tag and maintenance cost. Like the previous model, Alen BreatheSmart has an even smaller purifying coverage that can only go up to 700 sq ft. You do have to forego some features like Auto mode due to the lack of sensors but the rest of the specification including the swappable front panel design remain.
Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A

Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A

Also comes with 4 customized filter options and plenty of beautiful front panel design to choose from, Rabbit MinusA2 SPA-780A might not having the airflow distribution as Alen BreatheSmart, it rocks with a more comprehensive 6-stage filtration plus a wholesome of aesthetic enhancement including a thinner and lighter frame size body.
Airmega 400

Airmega 400

Better purifying coverage, CADR with dual pre-filter MAX2 setup, these 2 are the main reasons to go with Airmega 400 rather than BreatheSmart. Otherwise Alen BreatheSmart Classic is pretty much the better choice with cheaper price point plus the availability to customized filter and front panel design.

In conclusion......

  • Plenty of swappable wood trim front cover design.
  • Wide purifying coverage, superior airflow delivery rate and highly adjustable (up to 4 speed).
  • Up to 3 optional filter upgrade to choose from depending on your needs.
  • Ionizer could be turn on or off.

Other compliments include the abundant of features and, wide purifying coverage and airflow performance. For the remaining 12% users that gave it a not so good review, their complains mainly focus on the air purifier poor filtration against allergies from pets despite the right type of customized filter. Safety Tips

More on Alen BreatheSmart customizable

Built with significant plastic housing, Alen BreatheSmart customizable air purifier is large and tall though not the bulkiest in its class. The omission of casters makes sense as it is not the heaviest at only 21 lb. You could easily carry it around with the built-in handle. Plenty of indicator lights with round touch buttons located at the top panel, abundant of air intake and outtake surrounding side/ top of the air purifier. Filters are easily changeable via the front magnetic cover. The most fantastic part of this air purifier is the available designer panels cover option that we could personalize (check out Dark Espresso Wood Grain) similar to how we change our cellphone cover. On the whole Alen BreatheSmart customizable air cleaner design is clean, nicely executed yet easy to use.

Applicable area, airflow, noise level and power input

One of the strongest point of Alen BreatheSmart customizable HEPA air purifier. With the release of 2 air changes per hour, the air purifier can effectively cover a maximum of 102 m2 or 1100 sq. ft. in removing particles down to 0.3 microns.
