Don’t let the Plus version fool you. It shares Austin Air’s standard air purifier platform design and dimension at 14.5 x 23 x 14.5 inches. Considerably bulky though not the tallest structure that holds the risk of tipping over. The biggest complaint we had is its hefty 47 lb weight, primarily contributed by the premium powder-coated steel housing. Thankfully, the 4 wheel casters come in handy when moving the air purifier around for room-to-room air cleaning.

Austin Air HealthMate Plus Control Panel

On the usability, Austin Air HealthMate Plus is super-easy to use as there is only 1 front knob to control the air purifier. Twist it clockwise to adjust the 3 fan speeds. On the flip side, it lacks an air quality sensor, auto mode, timer, and filter indicator, which can be annoying as a lot of guessing is required. You won’t find it here if you want all the fancy tech bundles at the premium price tag.

Other Austin Air HealthMate Plus specification includes an ozone-free 4-stage filtration, outstanding 5 years all-in-one filter lifespan, NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) recognized, CSA (Canadian Standards Association) and CE (Conformité Européenne) approved. We are impressed with the build quality and 360° progressive Intake System supported by the 5 years warranty on residential use. Still, it adds heftiness and can be a problem for those with limited room spaces.

Austin Air HealthMate Plus air purifier’s impressive 1500 sq. ft. purifying range is the cream of the crop. It can cover any type and size of the room from the master bedroom, kitchen, living room, dining hall, basement, garage, office, and nursery home. Supporting the generous purifying coverage is the comprehensive 360° progressive system and 72-400 cfm airflow distribution at 2 air releases hourly. For an asthmatic person that needs more clean air, you can increase to higher ACH with a reduced half coverage. The performance is identical to other Austin air purifiers; feel free to check out other large air purifiers’ airflow performance via the comparison link above.

Filters And Performance

Here's the notable difference between HealthMate and the Plus variant. Austin Air HealthMate Plus 4-stage mechanical filtration is excellent against large to micron-size particles without producing harmful ozone byproducts. The first stage of defense is the outer mesh grille plus bundled pre-filter that captures large particles such as dust, lint, and hair. The second stage medium particle filter trap even smaller particles that were not captured by the earlier pre-filter. With the 2 initial filters protecting the inner filter, The enhanced 15 lbs. of carbon impregnated with potassium iodide would do a great job against smoke, odors, and chemical fumes, typically VOCs from paint, cigarette, formaldehyde, and ammonia. The last-stage 60 sq. ft. True HEPA filter would concentrate on micron-sized particles as small as 0.3 microns with a 99.97% efficiency and 99% microscopic particles down to 0.1 microns. This includes mold, mildew, pet dander, bacteria, and viruses.

Austin Air HealthMate Plus noise level is between 40 decibels to 65 decibels. It is considerably loud even at the lowest speed. Since there is no sleep mode, you could practice the classic "place the air purifier far, far away" to reduce the noise distraction during work or sleep. The discontinued Jr version would be a more suitable option for bedroom use.

The electrical cost is not the most efficient either for an air cleaner. It has an average 132 W power consumption, much higher than similar segment air purifiers. While you will see some increase in your utility bill when Austin Air HealthMate Plus runs 24x7, it is still manageable for most people.

^ Replacement filters/ estimated cost

Austin Air HealthMate Plus 800+ premium asking price might not be reasonable given the lack of modern features. However, it is a sturdy, well-built air purifier with genuine filtration capabilities. If you can leave without a timer, auto mode, remote, and more, Austin Air will be an exceptional buy.

Like the OG HealthMate, Austin Air HealthMate Plus air purifier filter cost is meager at around $65 annually. All this is due to the long filter usage life that you only need to replace the filter cartridge every 2-5 years. The only thing we are not a big fan of is the hassle filter change. Instead of a simple slide-out mechanism, you will need to turn the air purifier upside down and unscrew the bottom panel to swap out the old filter. It is at least a 5 minutes task.

There are plenty of great deals available on Amazon, and we saw a huge discount for the White version but not so much on the Black version. You can also purchase the Austin Air HealthMate Plus air purifier on the official website with limited customization and bundled deals. Alternatively, you can try your luck with Walmart, Target, BestBuy, HomeDepot, Lowe's, or Costco. Still, our pick has to be Amazon due to the low/ free shipping and hassle-free return; if you are not completely satisfied with the purchase or have a change of thoughts.

Final Thoughts On Austin Air HealthMate Plus

It's simple. If you like Austin Air HealthMate and want something more, Austin Air HealthMate Plus air purifier is the way to go. It has better smoke filtration, particularly against toxic fumes that can harm our bodies. However, it still inherits the usual complaints from the crowd, including high price, bulky body, and non-existence features. If health and good air quality are all you need, Austin Air HealthMate Plus can deliver precisely that.

  • Trio pre-filter (outer mesh, pre-filter, medium filter) blocks large particles that reduce the workload of the HEPA filter.
