Danby 50 pint is a good looking dehumidifier. Its simplistic, modern approach hid all ventilation by the sides and back. At around 15.4 x 19.8 x 11.1 in and 41.5 lb weight, It is around the size of a 30-pint equivalent but with a much heavier weight. This is excluding the weight of the front reservoir that may be filled with water. The reservoir can be slide in and out with ease plus there is a small peeping indicator to check on the water level. 4 casters are available to ease the transporting of the unit. Besides the usual air inlet and outlet spot, at back there’s a drain outlet for you to connect directly with a garden hose.
Moving to the top control panel. There are 8 buttons, 1 digital display and plenty of LED indicator lights. Starting from the left, you have a Danby unique Smart dehumidify button that can be turned on or off. In Smart dehumidify mode, it will automatically set the humidity and fan speed based on nearby temperature and dampness. Next is the filter button which is only used to reset the filter indicator light after you have washed the filter. The middle continuous mode will set the dehumidifier to run continuously when pressed. Press again to deactivate it (indicator light off). Up next, the fan button will cycle between low/ high speed (with indicator light) on press. Timer button will on/ off the countdown timer on press. You can control the timer via the up/ down button next to it. Incidentally, you can also adjust the desired humidity between 35-85% via the arrows button. Last but not least, the power button is self-explanatory.
Going back to the specification, there’s the usual washable filter, timer, casters, and multiple drainage options. Go with the DDR050BJWDB model for the basic non-pump version or DDR050BJPWDB that comes with a vertical pump. Danby 50 Pint is also Energy Star rated with 2 years warranty on parts and labor. As for safety features, auto shut off and auto defrost is here as standard. The dehumidifier will stop working when the water tank is full and perform defrosting as long as the temperature is not lower than 41ºF (5ºC). Auto-restart is also here that will resume back the operation after a power outage. Lastly, it is Energy Star rated with 2 years warranty on parts and labor.
Pints and speed
What’s inside countAll 50-pint dehumidifiers use the refrigeration method. It is equivalent to a refrigerator that uses the same technology. First, the pulled in air will have to pass through a filter that blocks dust, mold and other large particles. The high moisture air that manages to get past the filter will be pulled in to the dehumidifier refrigerate coils. Next, the wet air will be cool down and turn into water droplets. Once the air is separated from the water, the heating compressor will convert the dry air into the mist and be dispersed out. The collected water droplets will either be clear via removing the bucket or pump straight out via a continuous drain.
Keep it downThe difference between day and night. Danby 50 Pint Dehumidifier is silent at low speed but clearly noisy at high speed. If you plan to run for long hours at night, select low speed and you're good to go. Power consumption is also reasonable for an Energy Star Rated 50-pint model. Again, keep it at low speed if you plan to run it constantly.
