Honeywell HPA200 review: You Require 2 Filter Sets
Last updated on May 5th, 2019
In today’s review, let's check out the mid-range model from Honeywell, Honeywell HPA200 air purifier This highly versatile unit comes bundled with the exact filter set as other Honeywell air purifier but the clean air delivery rate exceeded even some of the higher rank air purifier. Is it enough to compensate for the lack of features? So without further ado, here is our latest review of Honeywell HPA 200 True HEPA Allergen Remover.
4 air cleaning options (Germ, General Clean, Allergen and Turbo)
True HEPA filter - 99.97% efficiency/ 0.3 microns
Light dimmer mode
Electronic filter change reminder
Auto-off timer (2, 4, 8 hours)
5 years warranty
Honeywell HPA200 review
Decent selling price with solid purifying coverage and CADR.
4 selectable cleaning settings.
Carbon pre-filter that is good against dust and non-chemical gases.
Honeywell True-HEPA filter that is excellent in capturing microscopic airborne particles.
Dual electronic filter change reminder (HEPA filter and carbon pre-filter).
Optional Light dimming option with 3 selectable pre-set timer.
5 years warranty.
Lacks common feature like auto mode, sleep mode, and air quality indicator.
Not the cheapest in annual filter replacement cost.
Touch buttons do not have the tactile feedback as normal buttons.
20.8 x 17.7 x 10.1 in
(52.8 x 45 x 25.7 cm)
14 lb (6.4 kg)
The lower spec to the highly acclaimed HPA300 but shares the exact design, and overall build quality. At 20.8 x 17.7 x 10.1 in, Honeywell HPA200 air purifier is neither the smallest or biggest in its class. Similar story with the weight, 14lb is not heavy but certainly not as portable as other travel size air purifier. Air ventilation can be found surrounding the body with air outlet right at the top.
Honeywell HPA200 uses touch-sensitive controls that are modern but not pleasantly nice to operate. You will find 6 main buttons at the top with LED indicator light right next to it. Let’s start from left to right, tapping the Timer button will cycle between 2, 4, 8 hours. Right next to it is 2 electronic filter change reminder buttons that consist of the top Check Filters button (True-HEPA filter) and bottom Check Pre-filter button. When either for the side LED light illuminate, you will need to replace the respective filter and after doing so, tap the button for 2 seconds to reset the electronic filter check light. Continue with the Power button, tapping on it will cycle between On/ Off, Allergen, General Clean, Germ, and Off. Allergen mode is best used during allergen season, General Clean is for general, everyday air cleaning, and Germ mode is during cold & flu season. For maximum airflow delivery rate, tap on the Turbo button to turn it on. Tap again to turn it off and the air purifier will return to previous cleaning setting. Lastly, the Dimmer button will adjust the LED indicator brightness between Off, Low and high.
To recap on the spec sheet, you’ll get standard 3-stage filtration with 4 cleaning mode including turbo mode, electronic filter replacement reminders, light dimmer option, 3 pre-set hour timer, AHAM certified, ENERGY STAR certified and 5 years warranty.
Airflow, speed, and CADR
310 sq. ft. (29 m2)
Playing second fiddle to HPA300, Honeywell HPA200 purifying coverage is at 310 sq. ft. at the lowest air charges per hour. Ideal for medium room size and you can push the air purifier to Turbo speed for optimal result. Airflow distribution is consistent on at cleaning mode. If you plan to use HPA200 air purifier in large room size. the air purifier would be more than happy do so.
190 cfm (323 m3/h)
180 cfm (306 m3/h)
200 cfm (340 m3/h)
Honeywell HPA200 CADR is not too far off from the airflow delivery rate. The dust CADR stands at 190 cfm, Pollen CADR stands at 180 cfm and smoke CADR stands at 200 cfm. On paper, you might think the air purifier is best in handling smoke particles, it is actually the opposite where non-smoke particles are handled better. Reason for that is the filtration setup which we will talk about it next.
What’s inside count
HRF-AP1 Filter A Universal Carbon Pre-filter (1 pack)
Honeywell HPA200 air purifier has the same filter size and 3-stage filtration as HPA300 which by no means is poor. The Carbon pre-filter can simultaneously trap large and gas based particles. For smaller and finer particles, there is the highly reliable HEPA filter that specializes in micron size germ and allergens. The only key differences between HPA300 and HPA200 is the latter requires only 2 filter set rather than the later 3.
Hair/ Pet hair
Honeywell HPA200 190 cfm dust CADR plus carbon pre-filter is more than capable of handling airborne dust and pet hair. The slightly better 200 cfm smoke CADR can trap odors from diaper cooking, and mild chemicals like VOCS, cigarette. Finally, the dual HEPA filter set is outstanding at taking down pollen, mold, mildew, pet dander, and dust mites.
Keep it down
Lets cut to the chase, Honeywell HPA200 air purifier noise and power consumption is no different than what another air purifier is outputting. Noise level is reasonably quiet at all 3 cleaning mode except for Turbo speed which is slightly louder. You will have no problem operating the air purifier in night mode. As an Energy Star rated unit, you can expect a moderate power usage across all speed even though there is no Auto, Sleep or Eco mode in the setting.
At what cost
Annual Filter Cost
^ Replacement filters/ estimated cost
Hardly any surprise as the smaller configuration with weaker CADR resulted in a cheaper price point. While annual filter replacement cost is still not the cheapest, it is cheaper than HPA300 as it uses 1 less filter set. The price will drop even further down if you do not utilize Honeywell HPA200 on a regular basis as the filter lifespan would be extended. Filter availability is plentiful since the filters can be used in other HPA series air purifiers.
Out of the many retailers online i.e. Walmart, Target, BestBuy, HomeDepot, Lowe's, Costco, Amazon is our pick as it has the best price (including refurbished model), fastest shipping (limited to U.S.) and hassle-free return policy. Honeywell official website carries the model as well but the discount is slightly less than what you will get in Amazon.
Identical in many ways except it uses 3 filter set (VS 2), HPA300 is the highest spec between the 3 True HEPA Allergen Remover, if you want the best coverage, strongest CADR and airflow performance without a care of the cost, this is it.
The cheapest in Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover lineup but comes with the lowest airflow specification (uses only 1 filter set), weakest purifying coverage, and CADR. Otherwise, it is the same air purifier from top to bottom.
It might have a slightly smaller purifying coverage and higher annual filter replacement cost, you will gain better dust, pollen, and smoke CADR. All the purifying goodies like PlasmaWave technology, Auto/ Sleep mode, and air quality indicator also comes standard with 5500-2.
If you do not mind hopping to Coway brand, at around the same price, Coway Mighty is better in every way with wider purifying coverage, higher CADR, Ionizer comes standard along with Auto mode, AQ indicator. Filter replacement cost is only half of HPA200.
Final thoughts on Honeywell HPA200
Our heart still sat on HPA300, but Honeywell HPA200 is a good replacement if you want something slightly cheaper but with more or less the same setup. As we explore deep into Amazon reviews, 73% that gave it 4-5 stars likes how the air purifier deal with dust and allergens. There are also compliments coming from the price point and a few on the overall usability. The 12% downer that gave 1-2 stars complains about the air purifier build quality, mainly in the fan motor department. A very few are frustrated that their air purifier broke down just after a few months. It is highly unlikely you will be the unlucky few, so HPA200 should be in your consideration list!
