Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A weight
Weight
19.4 lb (8.8 kg)

There are not many wall-mounted air purifiers, let alone a good one. Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A is not only that; it surpasses them all in airflow performance. The frame/ boxy shape design is elegant and relatively slim at 21.4 x 20 x 7 in size. In contrast, the 19.4 lb in weight is not the easiest to move it around the room. Fitting is tight with top-grade materials, including metal; Expect zero leakage emission or air by-pass. Upfront, you have the customizable front panel with plenty of design to go for (add-on purchase) as part of your home decor. Choose from Peanuts Designs featuring Snoopy, Gustav Klimpt, Katsushika Hokusai, Paul Frank, Starry Nights, Claude Monet, Van Gogh, to Hello Kitty edition. Right in the middle, there is a four-spectrum color mood light bar, which many people confuse as AQI. The air quality indicator is the small dot located at the right panel.

Air Intake is plentiful at all sides of the front panel, while the top air outlet is located behind. There is nothing else at the back beside the top handle for easy carrying and two bracket holders. Like SPA-700A, there is no remote-control slot because of the likelihood it will be mounted to the wall.
The Rabbit MinusA2 air purifier is easy to use and set up without prior knowledge. The Control panel is also located at the front for easy viewing, especially when hanging high on the wall. You have the main power button for on/ off and the three small buttons to manage the air purifier. Rather than using a digital display to show multiple info, MinusA2 stuck with LED indicator lights for every function. AQ indicator light will shift colors between blue (best), purple, light purple, red (worst). There is also Pollen mode where mood light will shift blue >purple > light purple > pink. In Auto mode, the mood light will be in solid blue.

Remote control is also bundled in the package. Speaking of remote, this is one of the few air purifiers with full access controls on their remote. You can control the power, 5 fan speeds, multi-mode, and mood light through the dedicated buttons.

Rabbit Air MinusA2 control

To turn on the air purifier, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds and repeat to turn it off. A simple click on the speed button would cycle between the 5 fan speeds (silent, low, medium, high, turbo). Clicking on the mode button would swap between Auto and Pollen mode. Pressing and holding the mode button for 3 seconds would reset the replace filters indicator. Do note that the air purifier will always start with the previous mode of operation. Like the mode button, the mood light is also a dual function button. On a single click, it will turn on or off the mood light. Pressing and holding the button for 3 seconds would turn on or off the negative ion generator (ionizer). Last info that most people are unaware of, you can adjust the sensitivity level of the sensors. First, press the speed and mode buttons for three seconds. By now, the air quality and auto mode indicator will start blinking. Press the speed button again to change the sensitivity level. To check the air purifier’s sensitivity, look to the right panel. If the replace filters indicator lights up = the sensitivity level is low. Pollen indicator light = standard sensitivity while auto indicator light = high sensitivity. Press and hold the speed and mode buttons again to save the sensitivity level. If you fail to do so within 10 seconds, the air purifier will restore to the last saved setting.

Wrapping up the spec, you have standard 6-stage filtration with filter life indicator. A multi-spectrum mood light, 5 speed plus Auto mode, remote and built-in wall bracket. Sensor-wise, there is the trio Particle/ Odor/ Light sensor. The air purifier will switch to sleep mode when the room is dark and resumes when the light returns. Passive feats include Child Proof Safety Design that stops operation when the front panel is loosed or removed. We are a big fan of Rabbit Air’s attentive customer service. Not only can you reach them via phone, email, and live chat 24/ 7, the CS team will respond to any of your queries in prompt time. Finally, MinusA2 is Energy Star certified with an industry-leading 5 years warranty. The warranty covers all manufacturers’ defects and poor workmanship, not that it is needed.

Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A is the higher variant of SPA-700A (700 sq. ft.) with upgraded spec and 115 sq.ft. more purifying coverage. Under an ideal environment, Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A can cover a healthy 815 square footage at 2 air changes per hour or every 30 minutes (ACH). For asthmatic persons that need more frequent clean air, expect a lower 408 sq. ft. of purifying at 4 air changes per hour or every 15 minutes. Suitable for small to large room sizes, including bedroom, smoking room, basement, garage, kitchen, playroom, meeting room, nursery room, and living hall. Airflow delivery also pushes up slightly, starting from 58 cfm at speed 1, 80 cfm at speed 2, 122 cfm at speed 3, 159 cfm at speed 4, and 218 cfm at speed 5.

Overall, airflow distribution is consistent and punchy, particularly at the lower speed. Auto mode is also available by default, thanks to the dual particle/ odor sensor. Rabbit Air MinusA2 will only use higher fan speed when a high concentration of pollutants is detected. Sleep mode will activate automatically in a dark room with mood light and the air quality indicator off to reduce glare at night.

As you can see, the dust, pollen, and smoke CADR figures are comparable, so consistency is not overplayed. It is fair to say that the Rabbit Air MinusA2 air purifier is effective against all types of airborne particles. The Dust CADR is at 193 cfm, Pollen CADR at 200 cfm, and smoke CADR at 180 cfm. The clean air delivery rate is also identical to SPA-700A ratings. The slight letdown is the CADR didn’t break the 200 cfm benchmark considering its strong airflow and cleaning coverage.

Filters And Performance

Most HEPA air purifiers that offer a standard 3-stage filtration; Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A is powered by the 6-stage filtration that captures all contaminants every step of the way. How the purification works are simple. The motor fan will pull in the large irritants like dust, pet hair, lint to the pre-filter for capturing. The pre-filter is washable, reusable, and will protect the other filters from getting clogged. The medium filter will trap large mold, pollen, pet dander, and dust mites that manage to bypass the pre-filter. Next, the advanced BioGS HEPA filter removes 99.97% of allergens as small as 0.3 microns, including small pollen, mold, bacteria, and viruses. On leftover smoke, odors, and bacteria, you have the option to choose 1 of the 4 customizable filters as such:

  • Germ Defense Filter - Specialized in biological pollutants.
  • Pet Allergy Filter - Specialized in pet allergens.
  • Toxin Absorber Filter - Specialized in VOCs and chemical vapors.
  • Odor Remover Filter - Specialized in heavy smoke and odors.

The Activated Carbon filter traps persistent smoke, gases, and odors. The optional negative Ion Generator creates a static field that releases negative ions and merges with positive ion particles in the air. The merged ions will weigh down, drop and allow easy capturing by the filter through a new cycle. Rabbit Air MinusA2 6-stage filtration is ideal for a heavy smoker that smokes indoor, asthmatic/ hypersensitive person, children, and elderly with a compromised immune system.

If you have concerns about the ozone byproducts with the ionizer, it is at an insignificant concentration of 0.002 ppm. The ozone emission is far below the California Air Resource Board (CARB) ozone safety standard threshold. If you want 100% ozone-free filtration, you can switch off the negative ion generator mode at any point in time.

Filter maintenance and care

First, remove the front panel by pulling it up from the bottom. A filter case should be securely placed inside the air purifier. Take it out by pulling it outwards via the side handles. Lay the filter case on the floor and start removing each filter accordingly. The exact sequence will be Pre-filter, Medium filter, HEPA filter, customized filter, and Carbon Filter. Remove all the plastic wrap on the new replacement filter set. Insert back all the filters to the filter case one by one in reverse order. Reattach the filter case to the air purifier by pushing it inwards. Lastly, close the front panel through the designated latches.

Changing Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A filters is straightforward but hassle as it is mounted on the wall and the number of filters needs to take down. The better news is you only need to do it every 1–2 years unless there is a heavy blockage on the pre-filter. The pre-filter is the only cleanable filter through light vacuuming with a nozzle.

With the new brushless direct current motor (BLDC) with coiled copper wires along the outside, noise is not a problem for this Ultra Quiet Air Purifier. Rabbit Air MinusA2 is virtually silent at low speed (25.6 dBA), slightly audible at 2 speed, and audible but not over the edge at high speed (51.3 dBA). Great for day or night use as the quiet operation will not disturb your daily activities such as work, cooking, Netflix, and sleep. You could manually set the ideal speed you are comfortable with or leave it in Auto/ Sleep mode and let Rabbit Air MinusA2 decide for you.

As an Energy Star model, Rabbit Air MinusA2 runs energy-efficiently with the help of the built-in sensor. The power usage is at the lower tier of a mere 7 watts consumption rate. In max speed, the power consumption rate is higher at 61 watts. Very reasonable for a 6-stage filtration with its strong airflow. Energy cost is around $0.10-0.15 a day or $25-50 dollars a year, depending on the state you are in. You can run Rabbit Air MinusA2 24x7 in the background without feeling a pinch on the electricity bill.

With the introduction of the WiFi-enabled SPA-780N version, the +-$600 Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A price bump matches the improved airflow performance. Features-wise, it remains the same as the cheaper SPA-700A version with high-quality materials and filtration. The +-$50 might not go down with everyone, but personally, the Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A is worth the extra cost simply for the boosted output. At the end of the day, you're getting a highly functional, durable, wall-mountable 6-stage air purifier that is unique on its own. Either of the MinusA2 would do a bang-up job when it's required.

On the other hand, the annual filter replacement cost is low despite being a 6-stage air purifier. Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A is one of the least expensive air purifiers to maintain apart from its BioGS lineup. The pre-filter and medium filter reduce the workload of MinusA2’s Advanced BioGS HEPA filter, thus extending its lifespan. At 12 hours of daily use, the filters could last up to 2 years, even with all-day purifying. The filter usage life outlasts competitor models like Winix, Honeywell. Best of all, both versions of MinusA2 utilize the same filter kit with no extra cost. The only thing you need to be aware of is the bundled $109 filter cost that cannot be purchased separately.

Rabbit Air purifiers are not cheap. It is at a similar price category as Medify Air MA-112, Blueair Classic, Austin Air HealthMate, and Molekule Air. Like every other Rabbit Air purifier sold online, there are little differences in selling price, even retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, etc. We highly recommend Amazon not because it's our site bread and butter; it's also convenient to purchase one. Amazon choice offers low installment ($27/ month), free shipping, bundled deal, and a 30-days return policy if you are not happy with the purchase. There is no discount from the official Rabbit Air website apart from the best stock availability, 90-days money-back guarantee, and excellent customer service.

Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-700A

Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-700A

The Cheaper and identical version with minimal compromisation on airflow performance. SPA-700A 700 sq. ft. coverage by no means is poor; it is just a lower-spec model that would save you around $50 bucks on the selling price. Filter replacement cost remains the same.
Alen BreatheSmart FLEX

Alen BreatheSmart FLEX

For a much lower price, Alen BreatheSmart Flex is also a good alternative with better CADR. You also enjoy a customizable front panel and 4 optional filters. The downside is weaker filtration, smaller applicable area, and less aesthetic feature. Of course, being a console air purifier, it is not wall-mountable.
Alen BreatheSmart HEPA Air Purifier Review

Alen BreatheSmart Classic

The Wi-Fi variant. For a bit extra, you will get the Wi-Fi enabled features with advanced scheduling. All the air purifier features are accessible at the palm of your hand. Everything else remains the same.
Blueair Classic 605

Blueair 605

Despite a mere “4-stage filtration”, Blueair 605 filtration depth is nothing to scoff at. Purifying coverage is identical, but CADR can go up to 640 cfm for pollen. 3 times higher than MinusA2 SPA-780A. Pricing wise is expensive, and so is the annual filter replacement cost.

Final Thoughts On Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A

A masterpiece in our book, MinusA2 SPA-780A is one beautifully made air purifier with the perfect 6-stage air filtration system and smart features. Gathering Amazon reviews, around 89% of the users gave it an impressive 4–5 stars rating. They liked the air purifier for its filtration strength against allergies and odors. Other positives also include the remarkable air-purifying coverage from asthmatic and allergy sufferers. A few praises the aesthetic enhancement such as mood light. A small +- 5% of Amazon users gave it a negative 1–2 stars. Most of them do not feel the air purifier can remove odors or reduce allergies due to lack of airflow. Overall, the upsides clearly overtop the downsides that contradict most beliefs. This would be a sure-fire air purifier if you could discount the expensive price tag.
